Paul Holmes
Paul Holme is relatively new to Rockingham, but the talented part-time artist has already been invited to hang his work in local gallery, Tall Poppy's in Safety Bay. His first offering to the gallery consists of a series of gorillas. Rendered in pastel chalk - the essence of each individual creature shines, or in some cases glares, out at you from the wall.
Pastel chalk is a relatively new medium for the father of three. "I enjoy the freedom of working with chalk, it allows my work to be instinctive and expressive, not at all contained or inhibited. I find this works particularly well for the animals I am currently creating"
Paul also enjoys working with digital technology. "A lot of my ideas are first explored on my computer - it also offers an element of convenience, it's portable and small, so I can work anywhere even if space is restricted"
A move from South Australia to Rockingham was precipitated by a drought his town was experiencing. The work dried up along with the water. Being semi-nomadic by nature and not adverse to change, a contact suggested giving Western Australia ago. He moved along with his family and settled in quickly. Encouragement from his partner persuaded him to dedicate more time to his art.
He has fond memories of working and living in Darwin. "It was a really creative time in my life and I was producing a lot of work" The aim was to get a portfolio together but Paul found his work was selling quicker than it was accumulating.
"I feel I am in a positive creative stage of my life at the moment and I have so many ideas I would still like to work on. Airbrushing and coloured pencils are two mediums I would like to explore more thoroughly" Unfortunately, for Paul a second lot of surgery on his right shoulder has seen the artist temporarily sidelined - or that was until his partner suggested he give his left hand a try! The result? A fantastic piece of a charging Rhinoceros. Now that is passion for you!
