What we do

As well as specialising in the sale of high quality original artwork, Tall Poppy Art Framers and Gallery also specialises in custom framing. Articles we frame range from the more conventional items such as photos and paintings, through to the more unusual such as shark jaws and horse shoes. Of course there is a myriad of things in between such as sporting and war memorabilia, oil paintings on canvas and needlework.

We also specialise in the framing of three dimensional objects that require customised boxes and frames to be utilized. We pride ourselves on our eye for detail and aesthetically pleasing design and layout on complicated items. We enjoy the challenge that framing unique and unusual items can bring.

  • What do I choose?
    Framing involves so much more than just putting a frame and mat around your work. Many different elements are taken into consideration and it is often the small items of detail that will turn something from nice into spectacular!                                                                                                                                                                                                                Some clients mistakenly believe that all frames should be small and all mats narrow. While a small frame and mount may suit certain art pieces it does not suit all. The finished product should be a balanced, harmonious and complimentary fit between the artwork and framing job. The framing choice should take into consideration the subject matter, medium, size, colour plus your own personal style.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            While home décor is taken into some consideration we tend to view each art piece being framed as a self contained unit and environment in its own right Interior design trends change and an article that is framed to exclusively compliment a burgundy feature wall may not look so good once it is repainted in a vivid turquoise!
  • How do I choose?
    We stock an extensive range of frame styles and matting in the shop. While you may at first feel overwhelmed by the sheer choice on offer, we aim to make your framing experience as enjoyable as possible. Our art framing consultants are knowledgeable, experienced and passionate about the framing field. We will be able to happily assist you with choosing something to compliment your artwork, home and budget. We will also help inform you on what options we can choose to help preserve your art for years to come.
  • The matting
    The matting creates an aesthetically appealing foil for your art piece but also provides a conservation function as well. A well chosen mat will compliment but not overpower your artwork. Different effects can be achieved by using multiple mats, complimentary colours and textures and fillets and "floating" techniques. Each art pieces individual features are taken into consideration and the matting chosen accordingly, something you can't reproduce with generic mass produced frames.                                                                                                                                                                                    Matting also provides a conservation service for your artwork. It raises the glass above the article underneath and allows air to circulate. This helps reduce the chance of condensation gathering and soaking into your artwork, especially in humid conditions. Moisture directly onto photos for example can lead to the image adhering directly to the glass and doing irreparable damage. Moulds and mildews can also breed.
  • The frame
    The frame you choose should subtlety compliment both the item you have chosen to frame and the matting. Choosing which frame to use can be the most exciting part of the framing process.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        The choices available are wide and varied and there is something out there for everyone. Some frames may lend themselves well to old photos because they aim to replicate the period the photo was taken in. Others may work well on ocean based articles, due to a white washed "distressed" finish. A wide variety of timber colours and effects are also available ranging from stains through to genuine walnut timber veneers.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            The frame adds a structural support to your artwork and holds the "package" together.
  • The glazing
    The glass, being the least visible component of the finished framing job, nonetheless provides a very important function. The glazing acts foremost as an immediate barrier between your precious art piece and airborne pollutants such as dust and smoke particles plus fly spots, silverfish, sunlight and sticky fingers!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                There are different types of glass available which provide different levels of protection. Standard or clear glass offers good protection from the elements stated above but only provides moderate protection from UV rays. UV filtering glass can block up to 98% of UV rays plus limit the amount of pollutants that come in contact with your work.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Both choices offer a clear view of your art work and do not alter clarity or colour. Non reflective glass has a light diffusing coating to one side which softens the reflected light in the room; it can however make your artwork appear hazy and is generally offered as a last resort. Ideally artwork should be positioned out of direct sunlight and hung on an interior wall, i.e. one that is not directly exposed to the elements.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  We treat all items with the utmost care.
